The only track of the 80s and 90s that has not been played live is “Don’t Look Past Me”, which was an unreleased track up until 1999 when it was released on Cleaning Out the Closet FCCD.
For the longest time, “Space-Dye Vest” also shared the distinction of never having been performed live. Mike Portnoy asked Kevin Moore to join the band on stage at the Metropolis 2000 Roseland Ballroom show (recorded for Live Scenes From New York) to play SDV for the first and only time on stage, as well as play a two-keyboard version of LTL with Jordan, but he declined. But after Mike Portnoy left, and the 15th anniversary of Awake, the song has been performed regularly.
“The Best of Times”, a very personal song for Mike Portnoy, was never played live while Mike Portnoy was in the band because it was still too emotional for him to play it. It is unlikely Dream Theater will play it live without Portnoy.
“Raw Dog”, the last song Dream Theater recorded with Mike Portnoy, has never been played live.
“Surrender to Reason” from the self-titled album has yet to be performed live.
All tracks from “The Astonishing” are to be performed live due to the entire concept album being played from start to finish.
Some songs have rarely been played:
“Innocence Faded” was played for some shows in 94/95 for the Awake tour, and some shows for the 2006 Octavarium tour.
“You Not Me” was only played for a handful of shows in 97/98 for the Falling Into Infinity tour.
“Anna Lee” has not been played since 1998 on the Falling Into Infnity tour.
“Disappear” was only played a couple of times on the 2004 tour.
“The Answer Lies Within” was only played for a couple of shows on the Octavarium tour in 2005/2006.
“Repentance” was only played once in 2008, with Mikeal Åkerfeldt from Opeth as the guest vocalist.
