John Myung has been the subject of many Dream Theater memes. There’s the “Cardboard cutout Myung” meme, which came from the notion that Myung appears to be identical on all photos taken with fans so DT may actually just be using a cardboard cutout in place of the real person. Another one is the famous “Myung Tackle”, where he tackled James LaBrie on stage during a show due to a bet. But the most persistant meme is the one about Myung never speaking.
His personality is a but introverted and silent, which means he prefers the one-on-one contact over the large crowd contact. Whenever there’s a camera around, he’s shy and soft-spoken. In fact, for years the only thing people knew John Myung to have said was “Actually, I’m feeling kinda spooky” on the “Images & Words – Live in Japan” concert video.
Of course, since then he has appeared on several videos (behind the scenes, tour and instructional videos), where he’s spoken at length.
But people who have met him know him to be a kind and generous person. If you meet him at a meet & greet, you’ll find that he’s very friendly and genuinely happy to meet the fans.
