The record company wanted a song more geared towards radio play, so they specifically asked Dream Theater to write a more accessible song. The music was written in two days, and then John Petrucci and Charlie Dominici went to write lyrics to the song. But instead they hung out over a few beers and started complaining about how everybody they knew used to have an attitude of “get a real job”, and how that changed once they got a record deal. “I always believed in you”. It was everyone, parents, friends, girls, acquaintances, bosses, but as soon as the record deal was in place everyone wanted to “know them”, being a musician was suddenly legitimized by having the record deal.
